Have you ever heard of Ama huts? These shacks are where the female diver "Ama" eat snacks and rest near the fireplace after fishing in the cold water. Moreover, this is a place of communication where ama divers can talk freely and laugh loudly together. The Ama huts of Shima and Toba city have been arranged for visitors to try their cooking and hear their stories. Good food with good stories have always been the best way to discover a new culture. Definitely a must-do when coming around !
About Ama Hut: "Ama" refers to the women who dive in the sea to gather shellfish and seaweeds as
their jobs. The tools they use to detach shellfishs from their rock are found around Japan and trace
back to about 5000 years back. In Toba city, Uramura district, a large amount of abalone shells and
pickers made in animal bone and hors have been found, indicating the presence of Ama in Toba since
humanity early ages.
Most Ama divers are located in Mie prefecture. There, they do not fish casualy, but sustainably. They check the size of each of their catch to maintain a balance and ensure the survival of all species. Ama divers of Mie prefecture have their own unique tools such as the "tanbo", a floating ring with a bastket to hold their catch, and the "kaginomi", a kind of small crowbar.
Located right in front of the Azuri Beach of Shima district Koshika, the Ama hut experience facility
Satoumian is an ama diver hut where you can enjoy freshly caught seafood cooked right in front of
you by an experienced Ama diver while she tells her stories and answer your questions.
The best part about this restaurant is that for each table there is an Ama diver cooking just for you.
As profesionnals of the sea, Ama divers have a lot of experience at both catching and grilling seafood,
even that you'll question the use of seasoning. Three types of seating are available; with regular
chairs and table, table with sunken seats, and with a cushion on tatami mats, which is the closest to
a proper ama hut.
If you're not used to eat on tatami mats, please have no shame on eating at a table ! This should be
a great experience, not a challenge !
As each group has its own space, this facility is not only used for toutist, but also for birthdays and
important anniversaries! Even the basic course is quite voluminous.
At the menu; Freshly caught turban shells, local clams, dried squid and two kinds of dried fish that
rotate daily, and to top it off, hijiki rice cooked in an individual pot with miso soup made from local
seawaeed "Aosa"
Seafood grilling right in front of you over local "Binchotan" charcoal is the best sight to whet one's
appetite.
Rotating throughout the year, Abalone are available from March to September, and Ise ebi lobsters
from October to late April. Tips: both are available in March/April !
For a different mood the dinner course offers a completely different experience, where only the sound
of the waves come to your ear while the charcoal crackles. On the main building, an Ama museum is
freely accesible, where you can learn more about Ama with pictures and tales, to either vizualize or
recollect the Ama stories of your dinner' cook.
In that building there are also Ama divers clothes of different sizes and some decors to make the
perfect photo shooting and make a memory of your visit to the land of Amas.
