Daio-cho, Shima City, has become known as a town of painters because its varied coastline, including
rugged reefs and sunset-tinted inlets, chalky Daiozaki Lighthouse, stone steps, and the people who
live there, stirred the creative spirit of those who love painting and attracted many young painters
and young art students.
In addition, Kamesuke Hiraga, a Western-style painter based in Paris, was born in Katada, Shima
Town, Shima City, and his paintings and the painting materials he used during his lifetime have been
preserved.
The Shima City Painting Town and Daio Art Gallery opened in April 23 with the aim of passing on to
future generations these paintings and artifacts, which are a proud local resource along with the
scenic natural landscape of Shima City, and to disseminate information within and outside the city.
Kamesuke Hiraga (1889-1971), a Western-style painter from Shima City (Katada, Shima Town), was the first Japanese to win the Gold Prize at the international exhibition "Le Salon", which has the oldest tradition in the world, and was highly regarded for his style of painting that faithfully pursued the subject matter of his paintings to the point that they are considered academic. In honor of his achievements, the gallery exhibits his paintings and personal belongings he used during his lifetime.
Exhibitions are held throughout the year, including special exhibitions of artists associated with Shima City. It also provides a venue for the presentation of excellent works from the Daio Grand Prize Exhibition, as well as for groups and other organizations active in the local community.
